Cristina Uta

Principal Dancer, Ballet Trainer, Coach of Excellence, Choreographer, Artistic Director of Dance Vision, and Assistance Director of SIBA Summer Dance Intensive

About

Cristina Uta was born in Bucharest, Romania, and graduated from the Romanian National Ballet Academy in her hometown in 1993. That same year, she joined the Romanian National Opera in Bucharest as a principal dancer. During her eight years with the National Opera, Cristina also performed as a principal dancer with the Cincinnati Ballet Company in the USA and the Ballet de Santiago in Chile

Cristina has danced the principal roles in many classical ballets, including Swan Lake, Paquita, La Bayadere, La Fille Mal Gardee, Don Quixote, Giselle, Raymonda, Nutcracker, and others. She has also delivered outstanding performances in neoclassical and postmodern choreographies by international choreographers such as George Balanchine, Ricardo Nunez, Dietmar Seyffert, Val Caniparoli, and Lode Devos.

Cristina was trained and coached by Janet Sassoon, who had also coached Natalya Makarova and other renowned ballerinas, as well as by Ivan Nagy (former principal dancer at American Ballet Theatre and former Artistic Director of Ballet de Santiago in Chile), Maya Plisetskaya, and Peter Breuer (international choreographer, principal, and artistic adviser at Salzburg Ballet in Austria).

In 2001, Cristina Uta joined the Salzburg Ballet in Austria. Between 2003 and 2009, she served as assistant choreographer and ballet mistress at the Salzburg Ballet at the State Theatre of Salzburg while continuing her career as a principal dancer. She remains a rehearsal director for Peter Breuer's productions in Austria and abroad to this day. Breuer has created many ballets and significant roles for her, including Titania in A Midsummer Night's Dream, Carmen, Lulu, Lady Potiphar in The Legend of Joseph, Nadeschda von Meck in Tchaikovsky, and Katharina in The Taming of the Shrew. In 2005, Peter Breuer received the Maya Plisetskaya Award for his Carmen in Salzburg, a production in which Cristina Uta danced the leading role.

In 2019, Cristina Uta became the ballet mistress, assistant choreographer, and rehearsal director of TANZLIN.Z at Landestheater Linz under the direction of Mei Hong Lin.

Cristina Uta's development as a trainer and choreographer is based on her over two decades of stage experience, training, and dance studies, which have given her a diverse and broad repertoire that extends from classical ballet to dance theatre and other contemporary works.

As a choreographer, Cristina Uta has collaborated with various institutions, including the Salzburg Ballet at the State Theatre of Salzburg in Austria, State Opera Ruse in Bulgaria, Schlote Production in Austria, National Opera Brasov in Romania, and Romanian National Theatre in Bucharest.

As a dance and ballet pedagogue, Cristina Uta has extensive experience teaching ballet training, pointe technique, repertoire coaching, and alternative bodywork. She has taught for over 15 years at international workshops, professional ballet schools, and for professional companies, working with renowned artists such as Peter Breuer, Maya Plysetskaya, Cynthia Gregory, and Ildiko Pongor.

Based on her experience as a dancer, Cristina Uta recognizes the importance of self-care methods. Her studies in psychology, mindfulness, and coaching have led her to include the "Coaching for Excellence" method for dancers, empowering young artists and students to reach their highest potential.

Since 2017, Cristina Uta has been the artistic director of Dance Vision in Austria, a team dedicated to creating, performing, and producing artistic, high-quality works that share journeys of inspiration with society.
